Therapists must earn the Licensed Professional Counselor credential from the Virginia Board of Counseling to practice in Richmond. This requires completing an accredited 60 semester-hour graduate degree program and obtaining a Temporary License as a Resident in Counseling. Residents must complete a 3,400-hour supervised residency program, including 2,000 hours of client contact, in 21 months to four years. They must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counselors Examination within six years of getting their resident license.
