To be licensed as a professional counselor in Memphis, therapists must hold a master’s degree from an accredited program, such as the Council For Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CFACREP), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or a similar body. They must also receive a passing score on the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification. LPCs with a temporary license must complete two years of counseling experience consisting of at least 3,000 hours, including 1,500 hours of direct client contact and 150 hours of qualified supervision.
