Prospective therapists in Michigan must earn a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling from a qualified program with a minimum of 48 semester hours. Graduates obtain a limited counselor license from the Michigan Board of Counseling. Master’s degree holders must accrue 3,000 hours of post-degree supervised counseling experience. Doctoral degree holders must accrue 1,500 hours. Applicants must pass the National Counselor Examination from the National Board for Certified Counselors or the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification Examination.
