Online Therapy considered eight key factors that can affect the quality of your therapy experience, including the therapists’ credentials, specializations, availability, and cost. Therapists included on this list scored highly across all criteria. |
Choosing the Best Austin, TX TherapistsCredentialsFinding a properly credentialed therapist is the first step in getting the high quality of care that you deserve. To practice in Texas, mental health therapists, including professional counselors, marriage and family counselors, clinical social workers, and clinical psychologists, must meet stringent requirements. They need to have a master’s or doctoral degree, complete hundreds of hours of supervised clinical work, and pass state exams for licensure. AccessibilityThe best therapist for you is one who can be available when you need them. To better accommodate your schedule, some therapists offer extended office hours and the option for evening, weekend, or remote sessions. CostCost shouldn’t be a barrier to getting help. Affordability, including per-session or monthly subscription costs and whether the therapist offers a sliding scale, was one of the key factors considered for inclusion in this list. Other factors, such as whether the therapist accepts insurance, were also evaluated. |

To apply for licensure in Texas, therapists must complete an approved master’s degree or a doctoral degree that includes masters-level coursework. After graduating, they have to complete at least 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience. Finally, they must pass state exams to become licensed.
The cost of therapy depends on several factors, including whether a therapist accepts your insurance. Not all therapists in Austin work with insurance. Fortunately, however, many therapists do offer a free consultation so you can get a better sense of whether they’re a good fit for you. Some offer a sliding scale to help make therapy more affordable. On average, the cost of a 50-minute to one-hour session in the Austin area is around $170.
