III. What You Should Know About Long Beach Therapy

How are Long Beach therapists licensed?

In California, the Board of Behavioral Sciences requires prospective therapists to have at least a 60-hour master’s degree in counseling or psychotherapy with very specific coursework required. Graduates must complete 3,000 hours of supervised clinical counseling over a two-year period after registering as an associate professional clinical counselor. They must pass a criminal background check, the California Law and Ethics Exam, and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination before applying for LPC licensure.

How much does therapy cost in Long Beach?

All the Long Beach therapists listed charge per session with rates averaging about $150; however, some are as low as $100 and others as high as $200. More than half of these therapists offer a sliding fee scale if you’re paying for counseling out of your pocket. Less than half accept private insurance plans, which may help you pay for therapy as a covered mental health service. Many therapists offer a free, initial consultation.
