III. What You Should Know About Los Angeles Therapy

How are Los Angeles therapists licensed?

Therapists in California are licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. There are four categories, each with slightly different requirements. These include:

  • Associate and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (ACSW, LCSW)
  • Associate and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFT, LMFT)
  • Associate and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (APPC, LPPC)
  • Licensed Educational Psychologists (LEP)

Each category requires a master’s degree from a qualifying school, two to three years of supervised experience, successful completion of clinical examinations, and, with the exception of LEP, the California Law and Ethics examinations. Candidates must also complete a criminal background check.

How much does therapy cost in Los Angeles?

Some Los Angeles therapists charge per session while others by the hour. The average charge per session in Los Angeles is $250, with some going as high as $350 and others down to $100. Hourly sessions cost around the same, with the cost for longer sessions increasing proportionally. Group therapy sessions cost less. Many Los Angeles therapists don’t accept insurance plans.
