III. What You Should Know About Brooklyn Therapy

How are Brooklyn therapists licensed?

New York must meet strict licensing requirements. First, the therapist must complete a master’s or doctoral degree with at least 60 semester hours of content in topics like counseling theory, human growth and development, patient assessment, professional ethics, and group dynamics. Then, the therapist must complete 3,000 hours of supervised training; at least 1,500 of these 3,000 hours must involve direct client contact. After completing the education and training requirements, a therapist must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination.

How much does therapy cost in Brooklyn?

In Brooklyn, you can expect to pay anywhere from $125 to $450 per therapy session. Each session typically lasts from 50 to 60 minutes, although some therapists offer longer sessions for an additional fee. Few Brooklyn therapists offer sliding-scale fees based on your income, but about half accept insurance coverage from Aetna, Cigna, BlueCross, and other major insurance companies.
