About Sam Weissler

Hello and welcome to Equipt! I'm Sam Weissler, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) based in the heart of North Carolina. With a passion for mental health and holistic well-being, I specialize in providing compassionate and expert mental healthcare and sport/performance counseling for both athletes and the wider Durham/Chapel Hill communities. My journey began as a student athlete at Johns Hopkins University, where I graduated in 2015 with a degree in Psychology and a wealth of experience working with both Baltimore Public Schools students and adolescent psychiatric inpatients at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Driven by my desire to combine my passions for education and child/adolescent mental health, I earned my Master's Degree at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2018 before beginning work as a school counselor in Durham Public Schools for four wonderful years. I transitioned to private practice in 2023 when I founded Equipt with the mission of leveraging the immense power of sports and athletics to expand access to mental health resources, reduce stigma, and promote positive mental health outcomes within the Durham/Chapel Hill athletic communities. As a former collegiate athlete, school counselor, and coach, I have seen firsthand both the challenges that athletes face in their daily lives and the potential of sport to promote positive mental health outcomes in our communities. Athletes are not immune to the rising rates of mental health issues nationwide, and my objective through Equipt is to provide high-quality and affordable mental health services while also educating our athletes and normalizing conversations around mental health as we redefine what "mental toughness" really means. As a mental health practitioner, I am driven by a deep desire to help people navigate the unique challenges they face in the athletic arena, in the classroom, and in life. My approach to therapy combines evidence-based practice with a personalized touch, tailored to meet the diverse needs of each individual. Whether you're an athlete striving for peak performance or someone navigating life's complexities (or both!), my goal is to foster resilience, enhance mental clarity, and empower you to thrive. Beyond my credentials and expertise, my commitment lies in creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore, heal, and grow. Together, we'll navigate challenges, uncover strengths, and work towards achieving your personal and/or athletic goals. I am dedicated to supporting you in your journey, both on and beyond the field, court, or classroom. I look forward to accompanying you on your path to mental well-being and performance excellence.
