About Kathy McCoy

Dr. Kathy McCoy is a marriage and family therapist with 24 years of experience seeing a wide variety of clients in her private practice -- first in Los Angeles and now in Arizona and, for the past three years, with online clients. She specializes in parent/adult child issues, grief and bereavement (including grief over the loss of a beloved pet), and trauma whether this is related to a recent event or to the lingering impact of a painful childhood. She also has experience working with anxiety, depression, emotions connected to chronic or acute illness, age-related issues, stress management and writer's block. Dr. McCoy received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University's Los Angeles campus and her Ph.D. in Human Behavior from Pacific Western University, Los Angeles. Earlier, she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in journalism from Northwestern University. She is an award-winning journalist and the author of 15 books, most recently "We Don't Talk Anymore: Healing After Parents and Their Adult Children Become Estranged." She has appeared on "Oprah" and "The Today Show" and writes the "Complicated Love" blog for PsychologyToday.com. Her podcast "Living Fully with Dr. Kathy McCoy" was a Woman's Day Magazine "Best Pick" in June 2019 and recently ranked 4th among the Top 15 Baby Boomer podcasts on the internet.
