About Sherylin Thompson

I am a counselling psychologist and psychotherapist in private practice in Canary Wharf in the Docklands of East London (E14). I am recognised by the UK's leading professional organisations for counselling and psychotherapy, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) as well the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapists (UKCP) and I am a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), the governing body for psychologists and the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). I combine my leaning towards academic accomplishment with a down-to-earth and approachable manner in working with clients. I have worked clincially in a number of settings and with clients from a variety of backgrounds and presenting difficulties. These settings have spanned hospital contexts, not-for-profit organisations as well as private practice. I currently work with leading insurance and Employee Assistance Programmes to meet the high-quality service demands of their corporate clients. I am a recognised by Aviva, AXA PPP, Bupa and Cigna. I also accept GP referrals in Tower Hamlets and am experienced in working with a diversity of concerns. I am also very pleased to hear from private individuals considering entering counselling and so I have endeavoured to make my practice as accessible as possible in terms of affordability, disability and diversity. On a more personal note, I am South-African born and have been living in London for the previous 20 years. On relocating myself in the UK, I set about establishing dual career paths. Before dedicating my career to psychotherapy and psychology, I also worked in the pressurised world of the media and communications departments in high-profile organisations. The blend of my two cultural and professional backgrounds helps me bring a grounded and practical stance to what might seem like lofty and inaccessible psychological ideas. MY AREAS OF WORK I work generally with individuals facing common human struggles and couples wanting to resolve their difficulties. We all go through rocky periods in our lives and therapy can help you smooth a way forward. Some examples of how therapy can help you move through difficulties include: Understanding what might be causing problems and repetitive patterns. Clarifying what direction you want to take in your life. Exploring problems with intimate relationships or family members. Overcoming trauma - be it from childhood or more recently. Coping with loss and bereavement. Managing workplace issues such as stress, bullying and career decisions. In particular, I have worked extensively with bereavement, domestic violence and adult survivors of childhood abuse. In addition, examples of my experience include stress, identity issues, panic disorders, eating disorders and self harm, anxiety and depression. You can see a full list on my website. TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy – Middlesex University Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy – Metanoia Institute / UKCP accredited course Graduation Diploma in Psychology – University of East London NCFE in Person-Centred Counselling - BACP accredited course Bachelor of Arts: Psychology and Communications – University of South Africa Member of the EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) Association HCPC registered: The title “Counselling Psychologist” can only be used by those registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), an independent regulator set up by the Health and Social Work Professions Order 2001. The HCPC only registers people who meet the standards it sets for training, professional skills, behaviour and health. Chartered Psychologist: Chartered psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) reflects the highest standard of psychological knowledge and expertise. Chartered Psychologist status is the BPS gold standard, demonstrating a commitment to professional development and high ethical standards of practice, teaching and research. Chartered psychologists are entitled to use the designation 'CPsychol'. UKCP registered: The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapists (UKCP) holds national registers of psychotherapists, listing those practitioners who meet exacting standards and training requirements. This includes meeting established standards of professional practice as well as abiding by the UKCP's Code of Ethics and requirements for continued professional development. BACP Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (formerly known as UKRCP): The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy register is assessed and accredited under a scheme set up by the Department of Health. It is administered by an independent body, accountable to Parliament, the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (the Authority). In addition, I am committed to continuing professional development (CPD). This means that I am always updating my skills and keeping abreast of new knowledge by attending regular training modules, conferences and workshops. I have previously worked in organisations providing counselling to bereaved adults; women struggling with domestic violence; as well as the charity Mind where I counselled people with a range of psychological symptoms including anxiety and depression, stress, panic disorders and suicidal thoughts.
